Bands to boost town carnival
BURY Carnival is set to hit a high note after recruiting six top marching bands from across the North West.
And they will provide the musical entertainment when the Bury Lions-organised event is staged in the town on Saturday, June 14.
Among them are Bury-based 1036 Squadron Air Training Corps band, which won the ATC national championships in 2007, and Warrington Phoenix Drum & Trumpet Corps, which took part in the televised Lord Mayor of London's parade last year.
They will be joined by Greater Manchester Police Band, the Band and Corps of Drums for the Lancashire Fusiliers, 3rd Davyhulme Scout and Guide Band, and Oldham Scottish Pipe Band.
For the first time in 12 years, this year's carnival returns to its original double bill, featuring a street parade followed by a field gala. And it's thanks to a £2,000 sponsorship package from Hollins-based accountants and business advisers DTE. The event will embrace a colourful procession of floats followed by a gala and fete, including a funfair and various other attractions, at the Wellington Road athletics tack.
Bury Lion Frank Mirabitur, carnival chairman, is calling on local people, organisations and businesses to throw themselves behind the revitalised carnival.
He said: "So far we have seven entries for the floats parade from local groups, schools and charities, but we are continuing to receive inquiries and are confident that the number will increase significantly,.
"For the gala and fete we have received booking for stands from seven charities and three businesses. The carnival has been boosted by two extra commercial sponsors - Royal Bank of Scotland and Andrew & Mark Smith Metals Ltd, whose financial support is critical to success."
To enter a float, or to book a stand, contact Bury Lions Alan Wilde on (0161) 633 5555 or Malcolm Evans on (0161) 761 7302.
