Pupils plant some 'natural' security
 |
| Pupils Melissa Priestley (9) and Nathan Burn (10) helped improve the environment and security at their school |
GREEN-fingered youngsters have been proving you don't need a big fence to make your school secure - you can do it with a handful of bulbs.
Dozens of pupils from Whitefield Primary School, in Victoria Lane, rolled up their sleeves on Tuesday morning to plant hawthorn bushes and plants that they hope will provide a natural security barrier for the land.
It will also complete a wildlife corridor' running along the boundary with the Thatch Leach Lane open space.
Bury Council's wildlife officer Dave Dutton was on hand to provide the plants and advice, but the hard graft on the day came courtesy of the pupils themselves.
Headteacher Maura McGoldrick said: "This is part of a project to provide planting around the perimeter of the school grounds.
"The new hedgerow will provide security for the school and a haven for a wide variety of birds and insects and for ground level plants and wild flowers. Bulbs will be planted next autumn to provide colour for spring 2009."
