Kart men go for Le Mans glory
MOTORSPORT: A TEAM of kart racers from Bury are gearing themselves up for a victory bid at the annual 24-hour endurance race at the Alain Prost circuit in Le Mans.
Thirty-year-olds Stuart Hoyle, of Brandlesholme, Phil McVay, from Farnworth, and Richard Greenwood, aged 26, of Ramsbottom, are teaming up with three other racers from the North-west in France to take part in the event which starts at lunch-time on Saturday.
They will race under the banner of Grange Construction Racing - after the engineering company owned by McVay.
The threesome are regular racers at the Three Sisters karting circuit at Wigan and are competitors at the privately owned Glan-y-gors circuit in North Wales.
They will be racing a a twin-engined car, worth up to £3,000, which travels at speeds of up to 75mph.
"We are all amateurs," said Hoyle. "We do it for the love of racing, but we think we've got a realistic chance of winning this year.
"We've drafted in three extra team members, because it's such an arduous race. There are 40 other teams involved, so it is going to be highly competitive."
The team travelled to Le Mans this week and are involved in testing and qualifying before the race on Saturday.
