LIFE is so good at Higher Lane Primary School in Whitefield that none of the pupils would change a thing about it, a report has found.

On November 12 and 13 an inspection team from Ofsted called into the school and rated standards "good" in the four of the five key areas.

They also concluded that staff were "outstanding" when it came to ensuring the 450 pupils are looked after and achieve their potential.

However, they did note that the school could improve in target setting and in how it teaches children to write.

Reporting inspector Janette Corlett said: "Pupils thoroughly enjoy coming to school. They talk enthusiastically about their school and say that they would not change a thing!' "Most think that learning is interesting and fun and particularly enjoy the practical activities such as mathematics games, science experiments and information and communication technology."

She added: "Pupils' behaviour is exemplary and this, together with their very good attitudes to learning, contributes well to the good academic progress they make and to their above-average attendance."

Of the staff, Ms Corlett said: "They share the headteacher Valerie Eustice's firm belief that only the best will do for all pupils in the school. Patients appreciate this and speak highly of the quality of education that the school provides.

"Without doubt, this is an effective school with good capacity to improve and which gives good value for money."

The kind words were welcomed by Mrs Eustice, who has been headteacher at the school for 12 years and is due to retire in July after 37 years of teaching.

"It was wonderful news to hear that the three inspectors view that, when I leave in July, I will be leaving the school in such good working order," said Mrs Eustice.

She added: "But it is all down to teamwork. Our staff work really hard and we have a fantastic team of support staff, who help to make lessons as active as possible for our pupils."
